The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door:

Dear Dogs and Cats:

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn’t help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It Is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years – canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat’s butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:

(1) They live here. You don’t.

(2) If you don’t want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That’s why they call it ‘fur’-niture.

(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.

(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don’t speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don’t ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don’t hang out with drug-using people;

(7) don’t smoke or drink,

(8) don’t want to wear your clothes,

(9) don’t have to buy the latest fashions,

(10) don’t need a gazillion dollars for college and

11) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children …

At last count we had helped feed 200 animals. Those of us who worked the event (Sara, Toby, Suzy and Liz) felt like we fed over 1,000 with all of the packing, lifting and paperwork flying everywhere.

Our original two hours flew by in a wink of an eye, and before we knew it we had long passed our end time. It was exhausting and our office looked like a bomb went off, but it was an incredible amount of fun! We will try to do this once a month moving forward for those of you who can’t get by during our weekday hours.

Also, talking to the pet owners Saturday, the need for a Vet Fund and help for feeding horses was reiterated. This has been part of our long-term plan, but we will work very hard this year to set these goals in motion and meet the communities need.

By Jessica Groover | Independent Tribune

Published: June 29, 2009

CONCORD — Sharon Carmichael was not sure if the trip from her home in Kannapolis to Foster’s Grille in Concord on Saturday would be worth it to receive free pet food.

“Because of the gas (prices) and (being) unemployed, I am on limited funds,” Carmichael said. “But it was well worth it.”

At the first mobile pet food drive for Petey’s Promise at Foster’s Grille, Carmichael received four three-pound bags of dog food, one bag of treatment for her dog’s dry skin and three bags of treats.

Carmichael is just the type of person Petey’s Promise was hoping to serve. The group started last July as a way to provide temporary food and pet-care items for pet owners who are having difficulty doing so.

“They don’t have to be unemployed,” said Liz Mellott, founder of Petey’s Promise. “All costs are going up, and if you need help to stretch your budget, that’s all we need (to know).”

Mellott started the group after reading about pets being abandoned by their owners. When she tried to donate to a pet food bank, she found there were not any and decided to create her own. She named the group after her rescued dog, Petey.

Since July 15, 2008, Petey’s Promise has fed 684 pets. At the first mobile food drive on Saturday, it fed 44 pets.

“We are tickled to death because that’s a lot of animals we fed,” Mellott said.

The group also benefited from having the drive at Foster’s Grille. The restaurant said it would donate 10 percent of the business proceeds on Saturday between 1 and 4 p.m.

Outside of the restaurant, Petey’s Promise had free pet toys, treats, cat litter, training spray, collars and other items it has received from donors.

Those who attended the mobile food drive were not only surprised by the items Petey’s Promise had available but also the amount of food they received.

“I was thinking we’d get a bag of dog food,” said Holly Mills, of Charlotte, who owns six rescued pets. “The amount (of food) and the generosity are awesome.”

Mills picked up cat food, litter, toys and treats. At a time when she and her husband are out of work, receiving these items for free helped.

“The last thing you think about when you lose your job is feeding your animals,” Mills said.

Mills said one of her dogs has an ear infection, and she has been unable to take the dog to the vet. Now, Mills thinks she will be able to do so with the money she saved.

Carmichael said she spent months putting off her dog, Zip’s, haircut and finally had to spend the $45 for it. Saving at least $70 on pet food made up for that expense, she said.

Those who received the food said they were grateful and expressed a desire to either donate what they could on Saturday to Petey’s Promise or promised to help in the future.

“I’ve never heard of anybody giving away food for pets,” said Bernetta Wright, of Kannapolis. “As soon as I’m able, I’m going to give back to these people.”

Prison-trained puppies help wounded troops.

(OPRAH.com) — If there’s anything Oprah Winfrey knows for sure, it’s what the love of a dog can do for your life. “There is nothing in the world like puppy love,” Oprah says.

Inmates at the Fishkill Correctional Facility work with the dogs to prepare them to help wounded troops.

Still, dogs are more than just companions. They can be the eyes for those who can’t see, lead those who can’t walk and calm people suffering from conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder.

Where do these service dogs get their start? For some, it all begins behind prison walls…

At the Fishkill Correctional Facility in upstate New York, more than 1,600 men convicted of abuse, robbery and murder are serving their time.

“I’ve been incarcerated for robbery in the first degree,” an inmate named Michael says. “I really had no regards for other people. It was always me, me, me, me.”

Now, a groundbreaking program called Puppies Behind Bars is transforming these offenders. Inmates are given 8-week-old puppies and taught to train them to become service dogs for the disabled, including wounded soldiers.

The puppies and prisoners are together 24 hours a day. The puppies sleep in crates in the inmates’ cells.

In return, the puppies give the prisoners something many of them have never experienced before — unconditional love. “I’m going to make my family and those around me proud of me again. Joining this program, it helped me to give myself a sense of pride again. To know that by nurturing and raising these dogs to their fullest potential, that I could give back.”

Animal lover and five-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close first learned about Puppies Behind Bars when she volunteered to help inmates at the women’s prison in her town. She was so moved by the impact of the program that she called “The Oprah Winfrey Show” herself to share this story.

“We know the bond that can be created between humans and animals. And there is common knowledge that it’s a healing quality,” she says.

“The bond that’s created between inmates — who never knew love, never knew responsibility, have only been told that they’re worthless — and the bond that they then train their dogs to establish with these wounded returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan is changing their lives.”

Roberto is an inmate whose life has been changed by the program. Convicted of second-degree murder, Roberto has been in prison since he was 17. “I am now 33 years old. I wish I could turn back the hands of time for the hurt and pain that I’ve caused so many people, especially my victim’s family,” he says.

Roberto was chosen for Puppies Behind Bars and immediately bonded with his yellow lab, Frankie. “From the moment I got her, it was amazing,” he says. “There was some beautiful moments in here that I shared with my puppy.”

Eventually, Frankie had to move on — and Roberto had to say goodbye. “The first night I was without Frankie, I have to say it was a long night,” he says. “It was hard for me to realize that the next morning I was going to wake up and not actually feed her that morning.”

Since leaving Roberto, Frankie has become a lifeline for Sgt. Allen Hill, who suffers from traumatic brain injury and severe combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder after he was hit by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Frankie helps Sgt. Hill overcome his paralyzing, violent flashbacks by kissing his face.

After a few months together, Sgt. Hill and Frankie return to Fishkill to meet Roberto. When Frankie sees Roberto, she takes off running. “She looks beautiful,” Roberto says.

Sgt. Hill thanks Roberto for all that he’s done. “Frankie has been there for me. She’s been my rock when I’ve needed her to help me out with a flashback or a nightmare. I can do things that for a year and a half I couldn’t do,” Sgt. Hill says.

Roberto is moved. “This is an overwhelming feeling, and to see you is breathtaking,” he says. “And to see what Frankie had done in your life.”

Now paroled, Roberto is expected to be released from prison this summer, but what he learned from Puppies Behind Bars will stay with him forever. “Being able to be involved in the puppy program has taught me to be a responsible person,” he says. “It has taught me patience.”

Sgt. Hill, his wife, Gina, say Frankie has changed their lives. “The biggest difference that Frankie has made in my life was, one, she allowed me the opportunity to go back to church,” he says. “And, two, she’s helping me gain my independence back so I’m not so reliant on Gina and other family members.”

Gina says she’s starting to see her husband’s playful, energetic side come through once again. “We’re starting to see that side of him again that we haven’t seen in the year and a half he’s been home from Iraq,” she says. “Frankie has brought my sons their daddy home. She has lit the light back in him that had been so dark.”

Perhaps the greatest legacy of Puppies Behind Bars is the lesson of love each inmate learns. Jesse, another prisoner at the Fishkill Correctional Facility, is currently training Joy, his third dog.

“She brought forth in me the ability to love again. It had been so dormant in me for so long because of the cold place that I’m in,” he says. “I didn’t know that I could love again, and we all get to see how greatly these dogs affect the lives of the people that they touch.”

Female Cat Application

PLEASE CROSSPOST WIDELY TO **MECKLENBURG COUNTY** RESIDENTS ONLY!!

Find a fertile cat (not feral) living in Mecklenburg County and get submit the application. A free surgery will be scheduled. No Questions asked – No restrictions other than living within Mecklenburg County (Drivers License or Utility Bill).

Is it possible?? The Animal Care and Control Free Community Spay / Neuter Clinic has “fixed” every fertile cat in Mecklenburg County!! That’s hard to believe!

I find it hard to believe since the kittens are arriving non-stop, however I have ZERO male cat applications and just a handful of females.
