Here We Grow!
Well, it has finally happened! We are up and running! Actually, we are more like toddlers who weeble wobble and are still very unsure on our feet, but we are getting there.
For those of you who do not know what it takes to start a non-profit organization from scratch, let me tell you. It takes friends, family, people who believe in you and your cause, and a lot of aspirin. I am very fortunate to have all of those. On that note, I wanted to mention a few of our behind-the-scenes board members.
First, due to the fundraising efforts of our senior board member, Corinne Economaki, or as I like to call her “fairy godmother to all animals”, we actually already have received several financial contributions. She was even able to secure a storage facility for us as well. This was a big relief to me because my garage is jam packed without adding hundreds of bags of animal food.
Also, a big thanks goes out to another one of my partners in crime, Sara Barkman. Without Sara you would not be able to read this blog, view our Web site, or see anything that would require a computer. I can get all fired up and fund raise, pitch media, lift 50 pound bags of dog food and kitty litter, but I can barely work email without Sara.
Although we are already receiving many pledges for pet food and supplies, our first actual bag of cat food came in from our friend Cindy Blackwelder. We were so excited, and it was truly a moment for us all. You know how businesses frame their first dollar? Well, I was thinking about how I could possibly frame the bag but the girls talked me out of it.
In case you missed the press release, our first big fundraising effort, “Lunch has Gone to the Dogs” is kicking off on August 20th. We are encouraging everyone in the Charlotte/Concord work force to brown bag their lunch that day and donate the money saved to Petey’s Promise. Just imagine how many animals we could feed with lunch money from just a few hundred people.
Well, that’s it for now but keep checking back for more updates. Oh, I almost forgot, Petey said to tell you all hello and thank you for helping his friends!
Best Wishes,
Liz and Petey
